What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability.  It refers to a cluster of symptoms which  result in a person’s having difficulty with specific language skills, particularly reading.  People with dyslexia often experience difficulty with other language skills as well, such as spelling, writing, and poor word pronunciation.  These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities.

Dyslexia affects individuals throughout their lives.  Its impact can change at different stages of a person’s life.  Secondary consequences may include problems with reading comprehension and diminished exposure to reading that can impede the acquisition of vocabulary and background knowledge.  Dyslexia can also have a negative effect on an individual’s self-image.  People who are dyslexic often end up feeling “dumb” and less capable than they actually are.  However, studies have shown that most people with dyslexia have average to above average intelligence.
